To be right, first seek to be wrong

To be right, first seek to be wrong

Whenever we have some opinion, our brain naturally seeks to find evidence that we are right. When we find evidence that we are right, it feels like we have succeeded and are validated.

Read: confirmation bias.

Problems today are rarely black-and-white, they usually are grey. This means that there will be evidence present that supports whatever view you hold. If you only seek to find supporting evidence of your view, you will be blind to whatever (possibly equally legit) evidence the other side holds.

If you want to be truly right, fight the urge to give in to confirmation bias. First seek to be wrong. Only if you cannot prove yourself wrong, then you will be right.
